Striking late 1930s (circa 1937) poster promoting the electrified service from London to Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. The Portsmouth main line was electrified in 1937.
The poster uses the typical lightning flash motif for electrified services, reinforced by setting the scene at night to show the bright lighting in the coaches - all reminiscent of the Southern's green and yellow livery.
The image was kindly sent to me by Paul Adams. who spotted it in a Melbourne auction where it sold for A$600 (about £400) early in 2013.
The artist was Jean d'Ylen.
