'Is your journey really necessary?' Early-1940s poster by Bert Thomas on behalf of the Railway Executive Committee. The committee was a government body responsible from 1939 until nationalisation in 1948 for the operation of Britain's railways.

The poster shows a well-fed gentlemen and a fur-clad lady with their dog (this in times of austerity) sensitively questioning the necessity of their journey.

This image has a certain patina. I have tried to clean it up but all my attempts made the poster appear artificial, so I leave it here as it stands.

Bert Thomas was a prolific cartoonist who created a number of posters during both World War I and World War II. Here is one of my favourites, a little blunter than 'Keep Mum'.
