The Southern "Fulmar". 1941 wartime poster encouraging Southern Railway employees to follow their collective purchase of a Supermarine Spitfire with that of a Fairey Fulmar for the Fleet Air Arm. This includes a photograph of the aircraft, rather than the bizarre symbolic plane shown here.
The poster states that the cost of the plane will be £5,000 (about £250,000 in 2014 prices - a bargain). The sum of £999 5s 10d (71p short of a grand) was left over from the Spitfire appeal and was to kick off the Fulmar appeal.
The narrative sets out a detailed process for collecting money at station, office, goods depot and works level.
The poster proudly tells the reader: 'We were the first railway to purchase a Spitfire; now one for the Navy!'
